Computer Science Glossary

Hi, my name is Salma Ines Jouiad and I study Social Science with Mathematics at Ahuntsic College for two years now. It is my last session before graduating. I want to pursue in University in Computer Science at University of Montreal. I create this glossary to help people especially students who are interested in Computer Science. They will be able after reading my glossary to understand the meaning of my 20 terms related to my future carrier. Each words will have a pronunciation to help people say the words correctly.

abstraction

noun

In software engineering and computer science, the process of removing physical, spatial, or temporal details or attributes in the study of objects or systems in order to more closely attend to other details of interest it is also very similar in nature to the process of generalization.

Example: topics will vary in degrees of abstraction

accessibility

noun

The practice of removing barriers that prevent access to, or interaction with, products, services, and environments.

Example: The restoration project involved repairing the roof and improving accessibility.

bug

noun

A bug is a programming error that causes unexpected glitches or problems for a program’s end user. Debugging is the process of identifying, documenting and fixing the issues caused by bugs.

Example: My computer can't stop bugging.

Press the mouse button.

Example: You got to click on the icon to open it.

The language that programmers create and use to tell a computer what to do.

Example: They are plenty of coding to learn.

An instruction for the computer. Many commands put together make up algorithms and computer programs.

Example: The decoded data is sent with the add or withdraw command and the quantity to a temporary memory area of the barcode system.

Information. Often, quantities, characters, or symbols that are the inputs and outputs of computer programs.

Example: I don't have any mode date left for this month.

Debugging

Debugging, or debug, is the process used to find and remove bugs from the source code of a program. Computer programmers use debugging to get rid of issues before the end user experiences any problems using a program.

digital footprint

The information about someone on the Internet.

Example: I saw all her digital footprint on Google.

disk storage

noun

Disk storage is the opposite of cloud storage. It's the storage available on a hard drive or a device's long-term memory system. When the disk storage gets too full, a device may become less responsive or have trouble opening and running certain programs.

Example: I don't have any more disk stockage on my computer.

hardware

noun

Hardware is a set of physical objects such as monitor, keyboard, mouse, and so on.

Example: The laptop drawing tablet is a very useful piece of hardware.

icon

Icon is a small visual display of an application which can be activated by clicking on it.

Example: Look at the blue icon on the left side of the screen.

A way to give information to a computer.

Example: The signal being fed through the main input.

Internet is a network that accommodates several computers to facilitate exchange and transfer of data.

Example: This is due to the size of businesses many rural being sole traders, education, and the cost of set up and the accessibility of the i Internet.

lan

LAN is an acronym for Local Area Network that spans small area. A LAN can be connected to another LAN to accommodate more computers.

Example: This project will build a complete model of the physical layer of a communications system, from a serial binary source to a serial binary output at a receiver, and analyse the complete 802.11a wireless LAN model.

pixel

The term "pixel" combines two words, "picture" and "element." It refers to a single point within a digital image. The higher the number of pixels in an image, the larger the file is and the better its image quality is.

Example: The pixels on this image is trash.

protocol

Protocol refers to the rules followed by two devices when they interact. The devices must share the same protocol to connect efficiently.

Example: You can see the protocol on this paper.

URL stands for Universal Resource Locator. It’s a way of accessing the Internet.

Example: Glad of the excuse to get off the bed, Luke pads across to his computer and types in a URL.

usb port

noun

Port is a connecting component mainly a hardware that enables two computers to allow data sharing physically. Examples are USB and HDMI.

Example: The number of available USB ports can be important to many computer users.

virus

noun

Virus is a program that is loaded onto your computer without you knowing about it and it runs to hinder the normal functioning of the computer.

Example: Or maybe the computer had a virus.
